{Spunky Baby "I"}

Baby "I" is by far the happiest, spunkiest (if that's even a word), wiggliest 3 month old I have ever had the pleasure of working with. A few times she almost rolled off the set! Daddy knew just how to make her laugh and smile. I can't wait to see her at 6 months and see how much she has grown.

{Welcome to the World Baby "K"}

Baby "K" is so lucky, she has 2 big siblings to look after her. I had a blast on this session! Big Sister was so loving and helpful, and Big Brother just wanted to play basketball and eat snack. We did manage to get some great shots of all three of them. Enjoy!

{Happy Birthday Little Miss "E"}

I have had the pleasure of photographing Little Miss "E" since she was 3 months old! She always had a smile for me at every session. Now she is walking and exploring, and she loved playing outside on this exceptionally warm March day. Where is this weather now?! To "E's" parents...thank you for letting me be a part of your life, and helping you to capture this great time.

{Baby "I"}

This past weekend I had the pleasure of meeting a wonderful family. Baby "I" was only a few weeks old, and was wide awake the entire session! She was not too sure about the camera at first, but with mommy and daddy talking to her, she did a great job, and we got some great pictures of her big, bright eyes.

{Mother's Day Outdoor Portrait Session}

Who is usually the one taking all the pictures? MOM! Wouldn't it be nice to be IN a picture with your cute kids?

I will be having a Mother's Day Outdoor Portrait Special on Saturday, May 9th, 2009 from 9:00am -4:00pm. The event will be held at Ice Age Trail Park/Prairie off of Hwy PD in Madison. This is a beautiful area with wildflowers, tall grasses, and hiking trails.

How it Works...You sign up for a time slot of 15 minutes, play with/hug/kiss your children while I take pictures, and then receive about 10 images to choose from. There are no limitations, grandma's, step-moms, foster moms, caregivers are all welcome. The only rule...NO DADDY'S :) There is also no age limit, newborns on up are all welcome!

I have a feeling that time slots will fill up fast, so don't delay in signing up! And feel free to pass this along to all your friends who have kids or Moms :)

Cost: $15/per family! That's it!! The only other cost is the cost of the prints you choose to order. To schedule: Call or email me at melissa@crocodilesmilesphotography.com or 843-7703

{Miss. "K" & Mr. "J"}

These siblings could not have been more different! Miss. K was all about modeling for me, and was awesome to work with. Her brother, Mr. J was a little bit more hesitant, but was so photogenic...just look at those eyes. Both kids were so excited to be outside on such a great Spring day, it wasn't hard to get them to play and run around and be themselves. So many of the pictures turned out, that it was hard to pick my favorites. Here are a few and I can't wait for them to see the others!

{Rain, Rain, Go Away?}

My son could not wait to use his new umbrella!! When at long last it was raining instead of snowing he begged to go outside. I was able to catch a few pictures in the 2 minutes he was actually outside in the rain!

Most people would reschedule a photo session if the weathermen were calling for rain, but rainy days can also make for very cute and fun pictures. If you have a little one who loves to explore outside, call me and we can set something up for a MUDDY, WET, SPRING session.

{Why Does Custom Photography Cost More?}

Digital technology is brilliant. The digital revolution has brought amazing flexibility and amazing amounts of control for the photographer, the hobbyist, the professional, the amateur. With flexibility comes a price though. Camera equipment is still considerably more expensive when you factor in its’ lifespan, the need for additional resources for processing those images, the time it takes to get a usable image and the effort that goes into all of this.

Even though you pay $1.99 for a print at your local drugstore and paying for film is pretty much a thing of the past (although you still pay for memory) you may be wondering why you may pay upwards of $40, 50, 70, 90 for a custom photography print. Some photographers hear this statement every once in awhile: "How in the world can you charge $60 for an 8×10 if it costs me less than $2 to print at the local drug store?"

The answer is multifaceted and has a lot to do with the time, aforementioned equipment costs, artistic vision and reputation of the photographer, expertise and the usual costs of running a legitimate business.

TIME of the CUSTOM PHOTOGRAPHER:
Approaching it from a time standpoint, for instance let’s imagine if you will that you have hired a photographer who has work that you love and that is travelling an hour to your on location session. Time break down:

Session prep time (30 mins - 1 hour, includes equipment and back up equipment checks + vehicle checks)
One hour travel time TO session
15-30 minutes prep time at client’s home
90 minutes-2 hours with client photographing subject
One hour travel time FROM session
30-45 minutes uploading time from digital cards from camera to computer
30-45 minutes time spent backing up the original images
2-5 hours editing time to present you with a diverse gallery of edited images
1 hour prep time getting ready for ordering
1 hour sorting through and checking order
30 minutes-1 hour prep time for delivery
30 minutes-1 hour getting order shipped
any additional phone time or time needed for add on ordering, shipment issues, quality issues

As you can see, average client time for a session ranges from just under 13 hours to 19 hours dependent on the photographer’s level of service. This is time dedicated only to your session. When the photographer charges $150-$300 for the photo shoot you are not just paying for the two hours of session time, you are paying the photographer for 12-19 hours complete time for your session.

{The Original Crocodile Smiles Baby}

Lots of clients ask me where the name Crocodile Smiles came from. I wish there was a better story, but its pretty simple. A year and a half ago when I decided to start the business I could not think of a name that I thought was creative enough, that people would remember, and that didn't have my name in it. My husband tried to help, but was of no use...so finally I let my little guy decide for me. He was already my little model, and the picture above is the image that really made up my mind to start the business and capture these moments of joy for every family!

We were reading books before bedtime and there was a little short story called "Crocodile Smiles." And there you have it! It was cute, it played on the expression "Crocodile Tears" and it was something I thought people would remember.

Since then I have had the pleasure of helping many become Crocodile babies, Crocodile children, and Crocodile Families, and I look forward to a lifetime of Crocodile Smiles!

{Little Miss "S"}

We could almost call her Little Miss Sunshine! She was so much fun to photograph, a typical 1 year old, moving from one thing to another every few seconds. Mom, Dad, and Grandma were all there to keep her attention and keep her laughing and playing. The family even braved the 30 degree weather to get some great shots of her cute little hat. Enjoy this preview of your images!
